What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of plastic aligner trays that are created for your mouth. These trays are made of multilayered plastics that are engineered to correct your teeth’s alignment. They slowly move teeth up, down, or even rotate them by using proper force at the right time during treatment. Every week or two, the current tray is replaced with a new one that pushes teeth just a little bit further towards perfection. Treatment can take anywhere from 9 to 15 months, but is hardly noticeable compared to other options.
Benefits
Unlike braces, Invisalign does not involve any metal pieces that need to be attached to your teeth or any wires that need to be tightened. Invisalign is also practically invisible in your mouth, meaning that many people will never know that you are straightening your teeth.
Aligner trays need to be taken out when eating and brushing. This means that there are no food restrictions like one would have with braces. This also means that teeth can be brushed and flossed normally, without bulky metal getting in the way of properly cleaning your teeth. Teeth can be straightened without compromising the health of your mouth.
The Process
Your dentist will be able to evaluate your situation to know if Invisalign is right for you. If you and your dentist decide to move forward with treatment, they will start by taking 3D images of your teeth, or taking a physical impression. This is important for making sure that aligners will fit you and give you the perfect individual result that you want. After this process is completed, your dentist will give you a full action plan and an estimate of how long it will take.
Once you get your aligners, you need to wear them 20 to 22 hours a day for them to be effective. Gradually, your teeth will shift into the right places and results are seen clearer after each set of new aligners (almost weekly). You will need to check in with your doctor about every 6 weeks to make sure you are on track with your progress and aligners are doing their job.
Once you’ve completed your treatment, you will be fitted with retainers to maintain your new smile for years to come.
